The Volkswagen Jetta IV (Typ 1J) arrived in 1998. Badged as the Volkswagen Bora in Europe while retaining the Jetta name in North America, it was based on the Golf IV chassis. It featured distinctive rectangular headlights, laser-welded fully galvanized body panels, and a high-end interior setup. Body configurations included a four-door sedan and a Variant estate.
Powertrains featured 1.4 to 2.0-liter petrol engines, a punchy 1.8 Turbo, 2.3 VR5 and 2.8 VR6 six-cylinders, alongside torque-rich 1.9 TDI diesels. Haldex-based 4Motion all-wheel drive was optional on higher displacement trims.
