The Volkswagen Jetta II (Typ 1G) launched in early 1984. Based on the Golf II chassis, the sedan grew in wheelbase and overall length, boasting a huge 660-liter trunk. It quickly evolved into Volkswagen's best-selling model in North America. Available in two-door and four-door body configurations, it underwent a mid-cycle update in 1987 that replaced vent windows and introduced wider bumpers.

Engine choices ranged from 1.3 to 2.0-liter petrol engines (highlighted by the 16-valve GLI 16V) to 1.6-liter diesels. The Syncro permanent all-wheel-drive system arrived in 1988. Known for extreme durability, B2 derivative production in China under FAW-VW continued until 2013.
