The first-generation Volkswagen Jetta was developed using Golf I foundations to cater to sedan buyers needing a large trunk.

The Volkswagen Jetta I (Typ 16) was premiered at the 1979 Frankfurt Motor Show. Designed by Italdesign using the Golf I platform, it added a distinct three-box trunk with 377 liters of capacity. Offered as a two-door and four-door sedan, the Jetta targeted European and North American buyers who preferred traditional notchback styling over hatchbacks.

Under the skin, Jetta shared Golf components: front-wheel drive, transverse engines, and matching running gear. Powertrains spanned 1.1 to 1.8-liter petrol engines (up to 112 hp in the GLI trim) alongside 1.6-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesels. Rectangular headlights distinguished its front end from the Golf.
