Unveiled at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show, the first-generation Suzuki Wagon R (CT21S series) redefined Japanese urban transportation by pioneering the 'Tall Wagon' microvan segment. Designed to maximize interior vertical headroom within strict kei-car external dimension limits, early production models featured an asymmetric door layout with one driver-side door and two passenger-side doors for structural rigidity and easy curb loading.

Engine offerings centered on the 657 cc F6A three-cylinder engine, available in naturally aspirated (55 hp) or turbocharged (64 hp) tunes. Drivetrain options encompassed 5-speed manual, 3-speed, and 4-speed automatic transmissions, along with optional full-time 4WD. In 1997, Suzuki introduced the wider-body Wagon R Wide (MA61S) equipped with a 1.0-liter K10A engine, establishing the foundation for international Wagon R+ export models.
