The first-generation Mitsubishi Lancer, designated by the A70 chassis code, debuted in February 1973 to fill the product gap between the Minica kei car and the larger Galant. Designed as a versatile compact car for global distribution, it was rebadged in various markets as the Dodge Colt and Chrysler Lancer. Built on a rear-wheel-drive architecture featuring MacPherson front struts and a leaf-sprung rear live axle, the chassis provided structural durability and ease of maintenance. The body lineup comprised two-door and four-door sedans, a two-door Celeste hatchback coupe, and a five-door station wagon.
Engine options included naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol units from the Saturn and Astron engine families, ranging in displacement from 1.2 to 1.6 liters. Transmission choices included four-speed and five-speed manual gearboxes alongside a three-speed automatic. The A70 platform gained international prominence through the high-performance Lancer 1600 GSR variant, which achieved multiple victories in World Rally Championship events such as the Safari Rally. A mid-cycle cosmetic update in 1976 refreshed the front grille and lighting before production concluded in 1979.
