Could Mitsubishi Be Reviving the Montero for the US Market?
The Overview
- A short video teases the outline of a new Mitsubishi SUV.
- Industry insiders anticipate the revival of the Pajero model.
- The vehicle may return to the US as the Montero.
There are growing signs that Mitsubishi is gearing up to introduce a new sport utility vehicle. Back in October, the automaker revealed the Elevance Concept, which many believe hints at the return of the Pajero, a model last produced in 2021. Spy shots from July showed a boxy SUV prototype, and recently, an official clip briefly showcased the silhouette of a rugged, high-riding vehicle.
The video, shared on Mitsubishi Motors TV's YouTube channel, focuses on the brand's motorsport activities before ending with a glimpse of the SUV. The distinct boxy profile matches the earlier spy photos, featuring consistent details like the hood line, headlights, and rear window shape.
Historically, Mitsubishi sold the Pajero in the US under the Montero name until the 2006 model year. With the Pajero's potential comeback, the Montero badge could also make a return. Supporting this, Mitsubishi filed a trademark for the Montero name with the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2024.
While Mitsubishi has yet to officially confirm the Pajero's return, the company has announced plans to release a new model annually starting in 2026. It is expected that Mitsubishi will collaborate with Nissan for this revival, especially since Nissan is developing a new Xterra — a vehicle that might share many components with the upcoming Pajero/Montero.
Details about the powertrain remain unconfirmed. However, the new Nissan Xterra is rumored to feature a tuned version of the Frontier’s 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing around 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid variant could be offered as well, and the Montero would likely share similar mechanicals.
Mitsubishi currently has a limited presence in the US with models like the Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, and Eclipse Cross. Although the brand doesn’t necessarily need another SUV, a new Pajero/Montero could serve as a flagship model to attract enthusiasts and strengthen Mitsubishi’s image.
