Mitsubishi Eyes More Affordable Outlander Sport as Mirage Departs
The Mitsubishi Mirage, once renowned as one of the most budget-friendly new cars on the market, was phased out after the 2024 model year. This move left the Outlander Sport as Mitsubishi's entry-level vehicle, albeit at a higher price point.
Looking ahead, Mitsubishi may introduce a less expensive version of the Outlander Sport to occupy the niche previously held by the Mirage. The 2025 Outlander Sport is currently priced starting at $26,190 and includes standard all-wheel drive. However, industry sources suggest that a more affordable variant focusing on front-wheel drive could be on the horizon.
Potential Price Adjustment
The proposed front-wheel-drive Outlander Sport would align closer to the Mirage’s affordability. Although exact pricing details remain uncertain, comparisons to competitors like Kia's Seltos, which reduced its starting price by $1,000 with an FWD model, indicate a possible modest price reduction for Mitsubishi.
Company Insights
Mitsubishi Motors North America CEO Mark Chaffin has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors. However, he emphasized the company's commitment to affordability, stating, "Affordability is a key concern for customers. We are actively evolving our game plan to better align with customer needs."
Chaffin also mentioned that reintroducing a two-wheel-drive model could effectively lower the entry price, catering to the strong consumer preference for crossovers over traditional sedans. This strategy aims to boost sales and improve dealer profitability.
Current Outlander Sport Overview
The existing Outlander Sport, introduced 15 years ago, has seen updates but still bears the marks of its original launch. It is powered by a 2.0-liter engine producing 148 horsepower and paired with a continuously variable transmission, having last received a facelift in 2020.
While Mitsubishi has developed a newer, more refined Outlander Sport, this version was not specifically designed for the U.S. market, potentially missing an opportunity to compete more effectively against rivals.
As the automotive landscape evolves, Mitsubishi's consideration of a more affordable Outlander Sport could position the brand more competitively, especially for consumers seeking cost-effective crossover options.
