Mitsubishi's Latest Eclipse Cross Conceals Its Renault Heritage

Mitsubishi is streamlining its vehicle introductions in Europe by leveraging its partnership with Renault. The recently revealed 2026 Eclipse Cross, while officially new, closely mirrors the Scenic E-Tech introduced two years prior. This model joins the Colt/Clio, ASX/Captur, and Grandis/Symbioz as part of Mitsubishi's Renault-based lineup.

In the European market, Mitsubishi now offers more Renault-based models than its own, with only the Space Star and Outlander standing as proprietary offerings. While some may view this strategy as taking an easier path, it's understandable given the high costs associated with developing electric vehicles (EVs). Investing in an EV for a market where Mitsubishi holds a mere 0.4% share, as reported by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) for the first seven months of the year, is undoubtedly a calculated risk.

Despite the similarities, Mitsubishi has attempted to differentiate the Eclipse Cross from its Renault counterpart. Unlike a straightforward rebadge, several exterior elements such as the hood, grille, and bumpers have been altered. However, a quick glance at the vehicle's profile still reveals its Scenic E-Tech origins.

The Eclipse Cross features newly designed 19 or 20-inch wheels and metallic accents on the rear pillar, yet it remains largely based on the Scenic E-Tech platform. In the competitive electric compact crossover segment, these differences may be less significant compared to strategic pricing.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV Specifications

Inside the cabin, the Renault influence is even more pronounced. The Eclipse Cross retains the dual-screen configuration with a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a vertical 12-inch touchscreen. Enhanced trim and upholstery options add a touch of uniqueness, while premium models offer a panoramic sunroof with adjustable electrochromic glass.

Built on the CMF-EV platform, the Eclipse Cross is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 215 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. This setup allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 8.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 106 mph. The motor is supported by an 87-kWh battery pack capable of 150-kW fast charging, delivering an estimated WLTP range of 373 miles.

Future Models and Production Plans

Mitsubishi has plans to introduce a mid-range variant later in 2026, likely equipped with a smaller 60-kWh battery similar to the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric's configuration. This version is expected to offer a range of approximately 260 miles, powered by a less potent 168 hp motor and 207 lb-ft of torque.

The Eclipse Cross name has been in use since 2017 and now signifies a fully electric model. Production is set to commence in the fourth quarter at Renault’s Douai facility in France. However, availability in the United States remains unlikely due to tariff considerations.
