The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Lancer (CB0 and CD0 platform codes) was unveiled in late 1991. It adopted rounded bio-design body contours alongside a rigid passenger safety cell. Offered as a four-door sedan, a three-door hatchback, and a five-door station wagon (badged Libero in Japan), the vehicle featured MacPherson strut front suspension and an advanced multi-link rear suspension arrangement. Engineering of the Lancer V (CB0) (factory code CB0) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. The CD9A and CE9A chassis variants of this platform served as the structural foundation for the first three iterations of the Lancer Evolution.
