The seventh-generation Mitsubishi Lancer (CS0 platform code), initially introduced in Japan in 2000 as the Lancer Cedia and sold in Europe as the Lancer IX, remained in production until 2010. It featured enlarged exterior dimensions and an extended 2600 mm wheelbase compared to its predecessor. Available as a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon, it offered practical cabin packaging and refined ride isolation. Engineering of the Lancer VII (CS0) (factory code CS0) emphasized high structural rigidity, aerodynamic efficiency, and optimized interior spatial packaging. Built with reinforced body structures utilizing high-tensile steel alloys, the platform delivered reduced curb weight alongside improved occupant crash protection. The vehicle was distributed globally in multiple configuration packages designed to satisfy diverse market demands and regional regulatory specifications.

Engine options included robust four-cylinder petrol engines displacing 1.3 (4G13), 1.6 (4G18), and 2.0 liters (4G63), alongside 1.5, 1.8 GDI, and 2.4-liter MIVEC units in Japanese and American markets. Transmissions encompassed a five-speed manual, a four-speed INVECS-II automatic, and a CVT. Front-end restyling occurred in 2003 under designer Olivier Boulay, followed by a secondary grille redesign in 2005. The powertrain lineup incorporated efficient engine families paired with robust manual, automatic, or continuously variable transmissions depending on trim selection.
