The first-generation Hyundai Avante (J1 chassis) premiered in South Korea in October 1990. Exported globally as the Elantra/Lantra, the Avante served as Hyundai's core compact sedan in its home market.
Powertrains comprised Mitsubishi-licensed 1.6-liter (113 hp) and 1.8-liter (124 hp) DOHC Sirius four-cylinder petrol engines mated to 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearboxes. A 1993 refresh updated front lighting elements.
