Next-Generation Hyundai Elantra N Spotted Testing for the First Time
Hyundai has begun road testing an early prototype of the next-generation Elantra N, which was recently spotted in South Korea. Loaded onto a car trailer, the heavily camouflaged test vehicle was captured by YouTuber Healer TV, revealing that the upcoming sports sedan will be far more than just a subtle evolution of the existing car.
Visual details on the prototype highlight an aggressive design direction. The car features notably flared fenders, giving it a much wider and more muscular stance. Up front, it sports a thinner and broader front lip spoiler, while the rear end showcases prominent, chunky exhaust tips. Most telling are the tires: the prototype was caught riding on 275/30ZR19 rubber. Compared to the current generation's 245-section tires on 19-inch wheels, this significant increase in tire width and track points to a serious effort to improve mechanical grip and high-speed stability.
Major changes are also anticipated beneath the sheet metal. Hyundai has hinted that the next Elantra N could move away from its existing 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in favor of a larger 2.5-liter engine. Back in November 2023, former Hyundai executive Albert Biermann confirmed that a 2.5-liter engine physically fits in the Elantra engine bay, noting he ensured the project was cleared before leaving Namyang. For reference, the current Elantra N generates 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet (392 Newton-meters) of torque. By comparison, Hyundai's 2.5-liter turbo produces 290 hp and 311 lb-ft (422 Nm) in the Sonata N Line and up to 300 hp in the Genesis G70. Hyundai has also been developing a next-generation high-performance powertrain tested during the Nürburgring 24-hour race, aimed at improving responsiveness and race readiness while complying with strict emissions standards.
The upcoming performance variant will build on the eighth-generation Elantra, known as the Avante in South Korea, which is already longer and wider than before. Hyundai design chief Sangyup Lee has described the upcoming project as the sportiest Elantra yet. While it remains unconfirmed whether the six-speed manual transmission will survive alongside the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, the next-generation Elantra N is shaping up to be an even fiercer rival to cars like the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf GTI when it debuts.
