About this generation

Defying industry trends, the G42 2 Series Coupe retained rear-wheel-drive dynamics by adopting the CLAR platform shared with larger BMW models.

Unveiled in 2021, the G42 generation 2 Series Coupe doubled down on traditional BMW engineering values while compact rivals transitioned to front-wheel-drive architectures. By borrowing componentry from the larger 3 and 4 Series CLAR platform, the new coupe gained a wider track, improved torsional rigidity, and superior chassis balance. Its distinctive exterior design featured single-unit headlights inspired by the classic BMW 2002 alongside active air intake flaps built into the renal grille.

Powertrains range from efficient two-liter turbo engines to the potent M240i xDrive, which packs a 374-horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine for explosive acceleration. Modern cabin tech like the BMW Curved Display elevates daily usability without diluting its focused driver-centric character. By remaining strictly a two-door hardtop coupe, the G42 stands out as an unapologetic purist choice in a rapidly changing automotive market.
