About this generation

As BMW's first front-wheel-drive production vehicle, the F45 Active Tourer introduced compact MPV versatility to the brand's lineup.

Launched in 2014, the F45 2 Series Active Tourer broke long-standing tradition by adopting BMW's modular UKL2 front-wheel-drive platform for maximum cabin space efficiency. Designed for active families needing interior flexibility in a compact footprint, it featured an elevated seating position, sliding rear seats, and a highly versatile cargo compartment. Despite its functional MPV profile, BMW engineers tuned the suspension and steering to deliver surprisingly engaging road manners.

The model lineup featured efficient three- and four-cylinder turbocharged engines paired with smooth manual or automatic transmissions. BMW also introduced the innovative 225xe plug-in hybrid model, which created an electrified all-wheel-drive layout using an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The F45 successfully opened the brand to a brand-new demographic while demonstrating the clever space packaging of front-wheel drive.
