About this generation

Replacing the 1 Series coupe and convertible, the first-generation 2 Series preserved BMW's classic rear-wheel-drive architecture in a compact footprint.

Introduced for the 2014 model year, the F22 coupe and F23 convertible established a distinct identity for BMW's smallest two-door line by succeeding the 1 Series coupe. Built on a traditional rear-wheel-drive chassis with longitudinal engine layout and near 50:50 weight distribution, the car offered engaging BMW driving dynamics that were rapidly becoming rare in the compact segment. Its sharp exterior proportions combined classic long-hood styling with aggressive lighting signatures, while the F23 convertible offered a fabric soft-top that opened electronically in under twenty seconds.

Under the hood, the range spanned responsive three- and four-cylinder engines up to powerful turbocharged inline-six units in the M235i and M240i performance variants. Paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission or an engaging six-speed manual, the F22 delivered exceptional chassis balance and steering feel that earned widespread praise from automotive purists.
