Revealed in late 2019, the F44 2 Series Gran Coupe translated BMW's sleek four-door coupe design language into an accessible compact package. Utilizing the front-wheel-drive FAAR platform, the model featured frameless door glass, a low sweeping roofline, and wide LED taillights inspired by larger Gran Coupe models. The interior shared its user-centric layout with the F40 1 Series, providing digital display screens and modern connectivity features.

Engine choices ranged from fuel-efficient three-cylinder units in entry models to the performance-focused M235i xDrive featuring 306 horsepower and a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation (ARB) technology came standard to suppress understeer. The F44 successfully attracted younger buyers seeking expressive design with four-door practicality, proving that compact front-wheel-drive architecture could support an emotionally charged exterior profile.
