About this generation

The 55 Series (J55) introduced in 1967 was the first purpose-built comfortable family station wagon model in the Land Cruiser family. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.

Launched in July 1967, the 55 Series (FJ55/FJ56) represented Toyota's first dedicated full-size station wagon variant within the Land Cruiser lineup. Designed to offer family comfort alongside off-road capability, it featured an extended 2700 mm wheelbase, fully enclosed five-door steel body, and distinctive two-tone paint schemes that earned it the affectionate moniker 'Iron Pig'. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Powertrains utilized 3.9-liter F and 4.2-liter 2F inline-six gasoline engines connected to 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmissions with part-time 4WD. The interior accommodated up to six passengers with improved heating and seating trim. Exported primarily to North America and Australia, production ran until July 1980, establishing the comfort-oriented Station Wagon branch of the brand. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
