About this generation

The Land Cruiser 20 Series (J20) launched in 1955 established Toyota's civilian off-road aesthetics and initiated global export operations. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.

Introduced in November 1955 as the direct successor to the military-spec BJ prototype, the 20 Series (J20) brought civilized styling and improved passenger comfort. Featuring rounded front fenders, integrated headlamps, and softer suspension tuning, it was offered in short-wheelbase (FJ25) and long-wheelbase (FJ28) chassis formats. Available body configurations included soft-top canvas models, hardtop station wagons, and pickup trucks. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Powering the 20 Series was Toyota's durable 3.9-liter inline-six F-series petrol engine delivering 105 to 125 horsepower, coupled with a 4-speed manual gearbox and a dual-range transfer case. The J20 series marked the commencement of Toyota's commercial export push into Australia, North America, and South America. Production of the 20 Series ran through 1960. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
