The 60 Series (J60) launched in 1980 advanced Land Cruiser comfort, adding air conditioning, automatic transmissions, and turbodiesel options. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.
Introduced in August 1980 to succeed the J55, the 60 Series (J60) brought high levels of interior refinement to the station wagon line. Featuring a wide five-door body, plush velour upholstery, air conditioning, and power accessories, it combined passenger car comforts with a rugged ladder frame and leaf-sprung live axles. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.
Engines featured 4.2L 2F and 4.0L 3F petrol six-cylinders alongside 3.4L 3B, 4.0L 2H, and the direct-injection 4.0L 12H-T turbodiesel (135 hp). Gearbox choices introduced a 4-speed automatic alongside 4- and 5-speed manuals. A 1987 facelift brought quad square headlights and fuel injection (FJ62/HJ61). Production ended in 1990. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
