Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series (J40) gallery (1960–1984)
The legendary Land Cruiser 40 Series (J40) produced from 1960 to 1984 became a global icon of ultimate off-road durability. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.
Debuting in 1960, the iconic 40 Series (J40) remained in production for nearly a quarter of a century. Engineered with a heavy-duty ladder frame, solid front and rear live axles on leaf springs, and signature flat body panels topped by a white roof, the J40 was produced in short (FJ40), medium (FJ43), and long (FJ45) wheelbase variants across soft-top, hardtop, pickup, and chassis-cab body styles. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.
Engine offerings featured 3.9-liter F and 4.2-liter 2F inline-six petrol engines, joined from 1974 by bulletproof B-series and H-series diesels (including the 3.4L 3B and 4.0L 2H). Drive was part-time 4WD backed by 3-, 4-, or 5-speed manual gearboxes. Renowned worldwide for surviving demanding desert and jungle environments, Japanese J40 production concluded in 1984. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
