Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Series (J100) gallery (1998–2007)
The 100 Series (J100) debuted in 1998, introducing a smooth V8 engine, independent front suspension, and AHC height-adjustable suspension. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.
Introduced in January 1998, the 100 Series (J100) brought high-speed refined road handling to the flaghship SUV line. The standard J100 adopted an independent double-wishbone front suspension paired with rack-and-pinion steering. Concurrently, a rugged variant designated Land Cruiser 105 retained a rigid front live axle for heavy-duty off-road use. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.
Under the hood, the J100 debuted Toyota's 4.7-liter 2UZ-FE V8 petrol engine (230–275 hp) alongside the 4.2-liter 1HD-FTE direct-injection turbodiesel (204 hp). Features included Active Height Control (AHC) hydraulic suspension. Transmissions included 5-speed manuals and 4- or 5-speed automatics. Facelifts in 2002 and 2005 updated exterior LEDs and dashboard electronics. Production ran until 2007. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
