The third generation Toyota Hiace family (H50/H60/H70/H80/H90 series) arrived in December 1982. The design featured streamlined body surfaces, rectangular headlights, and larger window apertures. The comprehensive range encompassed panel cargo vans, combi models, luxurious Custom Wagon minibuses seating 7 to 15 passengers, and heavy-duty pickup variants. Passenger trims offered high comfort standards, including plush velour seating, dual air-conditioning units, twin sunroofs, and digital instrument displays.
A significant engineering debut occurred in 1985 with the introduction of part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) featuring a transfer case with low-range gearing. Powertrains included 1.8-liter 2Y, 2.0-liter 3Y, and 2.4-liter 4Y gasoline units, alongside durable 2.2-liter L and 2.4-liter 2L (83 hp) diesel engines. Transmissions were five-speed manuals or four-speed automatics. A mid-cycle refresh in 1985 revised the front grille mesh, front bumper profile, and interior dash controls.
