The first generation Toyota Hiace light commercial family (H10 series) debuted in October 1967. Designed as a versatile cab-over-engine (COE) commercial vehicle with the driver positioned over the front axle, the layout maximized interior cargo and passenger space relative to its exterior footprint. The H10 line was manufactured in a broad range of body configurations, including a panel cargo van, a multi-passenger minibus (Commuter) carrying up to 15 passengers, a dual-cab combi, and a flatbed pickup truck. The interior focused on durability and utility.

Initial models were powered by a 1.3-liter P-series four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 56 horsepower, supplemented by 1.5-liter 2R and 1.6-liter 12R (84 hp) units, topped by a 1.8-liter 16R in 1975. Powertrains were coupled with a four-speed column-shifted manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Suspension utilized an independent front wishbone setup paired with a heavy-duty leaf-sprung rear live axle. Cosmetic facelifts in 1971 and 1975 updated the front grille fascia and lighting.
