The fourth generation Toyota Hiace family (H100 series) launched in August 1989 and remained in production for 15 years, establishing an unrivaled global reputation for commercial durability. The exterior presented a smooth, aerodynamic body with expansive window glazing. Offered in standard and long wheelbases, low and high roof heights, as panel vans and passenger wagons. Flagship Hiace Super Custom Limited passenger models featured plush leather upholstery, electric captain's chairs, a Triple Moonroof, and a premium audio system.
The mechanical highlight was Toyota's renowned 3.0-liter 1KZ-TE turbodiesel four-cylinder engine producing 130–145 horsepower, celebrated for massive low-end torque and extreme reliability. Additional engines included the 2.4-liter 2L, 2.8-liter 3L, 3.0-liter 5L diesels, and 2.0-liter 1RZ-E or 2.4-liter 2RZ-E gasoline units. Transmissions included five-speed manuals, four-speed automatics, and Full-Time 4WD. Major facelifts in 1993, 1996, and 1999 updated the front grille, clear headlight lenses, and dashboard ergonomics.
