The second generation Toyota Hiace family (H20/H30/H40 series) launched in February 1977. Retaining a cab-over architecture, the exterior adopted a formal rectangular body with prominent shoulder creases and dual round (later square) headlamps. The lineup expanded to offer short and long wheelbases, high-roof configurations, panel vans, Commuter minibuses, factory campers, and pickup trucks. Driver ergonomics improved with a revised dashboard layout, upgraded heating/ventilation, and optional power steering on top passenger models.
A major mechanical milestone was the introduction of the first diesel engine to the Hiace line—a 2.2-liter naturally aspirated Type L four-cylinder producing 72 horsepower. Gasoline engine choices included the 1.6-liter 12R-J, 1.8-liter 16R-J, and 2.0-liter 18R-J. Transmissions were four- or five-speed manual gearboxes alongside a three-speed automatic. Cargo payload capacity increased to 1.25 metric tons. Facelifts in 1979 and 1981 updated the front grille inserts and bumper trim.
