The seventh and final generation Toyota Carina sedan (T210 series) debuted in August 1996. The exterior returned to a formal rectangular sedan profile with crisp shoulder lines and a narrow front grille. Built using Toyota's GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) safety bodyshell, the cabin provided superior crash protection alongside standard dual airbags, ABS brakes, and automatic climate control.

The performance pinnacle was the Carina GT, powered by the renowned 1.6-liter 20-valve 4A-GE 'Blacktop' engine featuring individual throttle bodies and VVT outputting 165 horsepower, paired with a five- or six-speed manual gearbox. Standard engines included the 1.5-liter 5A-FE, 1.8-liter 7A-FE Lean Burn, 2.0-liter 3S-FE (AWD), and a 2.2-liter 3C-TE turbodiesel. A 1998 facelift updated clear headlamp lenses and taillights. Production concluded in December 2001, succeeded by the Toyota Allion.
