The fourth generation Toyota Carina (T150 series) debuted in May 1984, executing a historic transition from rear-wheel drive to a front-wheel-drive architecture on Toyota's T platform. The exterior presented streamlined body lines, flush glass assemblies, and integrated plastic bumpers. Offered initially as a four-door sedan and five-door liftback, the range added the stylish Carina ED (Exciting Dressy) four-door hardtop in 1985 featuring a lowered, pillarless roof profile. Interior upgrades focused on driver ergonomics and velour upholstery.

Engine selections featured fuel-injected four-cylinder gasoline engines: a 1.5-liter 3A-LU (85 hp), a 1.8-liter 1S-iLU (100 hp), and the iconic 1.6-liter 16-valve DOHC 4A-GELU generating 130 horsepower on GT trims, alongside a 2.0-liter 2C diesel (73 hp). Transmissions included five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics. Suspension comprised MacPherson struts at all four corners. A 1986 facelift updated the front grille inserts and clear lighting lenses.
