Toyota Carina I (A10) photos

The first generation Toyota Carina (A10/A30 series) launched in Japan in December 1970. Engineered on a shared rear-wheel-drive chassis with the Celica A20 sports coupe, the Carina was styled as a youthful, performance-oriented alternative to the mainstream Corona sedan. Offered initially as a four-door sedan and a two-door hardtop coupe, the range expanded in 1975 to include a five-door station wagon. Exterior styling featured crisp shoulder lines, a bold upright front grille, and quad round headlamps.

Powertrains comprised Toyota's T-series and R-series four-cylinder gasoline engines: a 1.4-liter T (86 hp), 1.6-liter 2T (100 hp), and 2.0-liter 18R (105–115 hp). The performance-themed 1600GT trim introduced the twin-cam 2T-G engine with dual Solex carburetors delivering 115 horsepower paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Transmissions included four- and five-speed manuals alongside Toyoglide automatics. Facelifts in 1972 and 1974 refreshed the front grille mesh and rear taillights.
