The fifth generation Toyota Carina (T170 series) launched in May 1988, adopting smooth, aerodynamic body contours with narrow headlights and integrated fog lamps. Available as a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon (Carina Surf), the spacious cabin offered amber-illuminated gauge clusters, power accessories, automatic climate control, and high-grade fabric upholstery.

A key engineering advance was the introduction of Full-Time 4WD models featuring a central differential lock. Powertrains comprised 16-valve fuel-injected gasoline engines: a 1.5-liter 5A-FE (85–105 hp), 1.8-liter 4S-FE (105–115 hp), 2.0-liter 3S-FE (135 hp), and a high-revving 1.6-liter 4A-GE (140 hp) on GT trims, alongside a 2.0-liter 2C diesel (73 hp). Transmissions were five-speed manuals or four-speed automatics. A 1990 update refreshed the front grille mesh and rear taillights.
