The second-generation Suzuki Swift (EA/MA) was produced from 1988 to 2004 across hatchback, sedan, and convertible body styles.
Introduced in September 1988, the second-generation Suzuki Swift (EA/MA chassis series) adopted an aerodynamic body design with smooth contours and fully independent four-wheel suspension. The model expanded its lineup significantly to include 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, a 4-door notchback sedan, and a 2-door convertible. Global production spanned multiple countries, including Japan, Hungary (Magyar Suzuki), India, Colombia, and the United States under various GM brand nameplates.
Engine offerings ranged from a 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit to 1.3-liter SOHC and DOHC four-cylinder engines. The Swift GTi performance model retained a high-revving 1.3-liter 16-valve DOHC engine delivering 101 hp, capable of driving the lightweight chassis from 0 to 100 km/h in under 9 seconds. Full-time four-wheel-drive variants were also available. A comprehensive facelift in 1996 introduced modified bumper designs, new interior layouts, and safety improvements, keeping European production alive in Hungary until 2004.
