Suzuki Swift I (AA) gallery (1983–1988)
The first generation of the Suzuki Swift subcompact hatchback (AA) was manufactured from 1983 to 1988.
The original Suzuki Swift (chassis code AA), originally launched in Japan as the Suzuki Cultus, debuted at the 30th Tokyo Motor Show in late 1983. Designed in partnership with General Motors, the compact hatchback featured an exceptionally lightweight unibody construction, straightforward mechanicals, and high fuel economy. Offered in three-door and five-door hatchback configurations, the platform was rebadged internationally as the Chevrolet Sprint, Pontiac Firefly, and Holden Barina.
Powertrains initially consisted of a 1.0-liter three-cylinder G10 engine producing 50 hp and a 1.3-liter four-cylinder G13A engine. In 1986, Suzuki introduced the high-performance Swift GTi variant equipped with a twin-cam 16-valve 1.3-liter G13B engine generating 97 hp, combined with four-wheel disc brakes and a stiffened suspension. A mid-cycle update in 1986 revised the front fascia styling and introduced coil-spring rear suspension setups to replace the earlier leaf springs.
