Unveiled at the 2019 New York Auto Show, the sixth-generation Outback (BT code) adopted the modular Subaru Global Platform (SGP), augmenting structural stiffness by 70%. High-tier variants substituted the legacy 3.6L flat-six with a turbocharged 2.4-liter FA24F flat-four (260 hp), complementing the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter FB25D engine (182 hp) paired with a Lineartronic CVT and AWD. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Interior layout centered around an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen display. In 2021, Subaru added the off-road Wilderness variant featuring a 240 mm ground clearance, re-tuned suspension, and all-terrain tires. A 2022 facelift restyled the headlights, front bumper cladding, and upgraded the EyeSight stereo-camera system. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
