The fifth generation Outback incorporated a rigid chassis structure, the X-Mode off-road control program, and expanded EyeSight availability.
Revealed at the 2014 New York Auto Show, the fifth-generation Outback (BS code) introduced a refined body shell featuring a 67% increase in torsional rigidity and improved aerodynamic efficiency. Standard features included the X-Mode off-road terrain management system regulating engine response, Lineartronic CVT behavior, and AWD braking controls. Power was supplied by the 2.5L FB25 (175 hp), 3.6L EZ36D (256 hp), and 2.0L diesel engine. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A 2017 update refreshed the front grille, exterior side mirrors, cabin materials, and added smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside third-generation EyeSight capabilities. Fifth-generation production concluded in 2019. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
