Debuting at the 2009 New York International Auto Show, the fourth-generation Outback (BR code) grew significantly in cabin width and roof height, shifting closer to full mid-size crossover proportions. Engine options consisted of 2.5-liter four-cylinder units, the flagship 3.6-liter EZ36D flat-six (256 hp), and the 2.0-liter EE20 diesel for select export regions. Naturally aspirated 2.5L models debuted the Lineartronic chain-driven CVT. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

A 2012 mid-cycle facelift restyled the front fascia with enlarged fog lamps, refined suspension damper settings, and launched EyeSight safety technology in major markets. Fourth-generation Outback production ended in 2014. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
