Debuting in late 1998, the second-generation Outback (BH platform) adapted the third-generation Legacy chassis, introducing a low-profile multi-link rear suspension that enhanced cargo volume and ride composure. In addition to the ubiquitous wagon, a raised four-door sedan trim (Outback SUS) was marketed in Select regions. Mainstream models utilized the updated 2.5-liter EJ251 flat-four engine delivering 165 hp. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.

In 2000, Subaru introduced the flagship H6-3.0 trim featuring the newly developed EZ30 3.0-liter flat-six engine (212 hp) paired with a VTD AWD automatic system. A 2001 facelift brought subtle updates to the grille, headlamps, and cabin ergonomics before production ended in 2004. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort.
