Subaru Outback I (BG) gallery (1994–1999)
The first generation Subaru Outback was launched in 1994 as a rugged, raised wagon derived from the Legacy platform.
Introduced in 1994 as the Legacy Outback before evolving into a standalone model nameplate, the first-generation Outback (BG code) pioneered the modern cross-wagon crossover segment. Designed as a versatile alternative to traditional body-on-frame SUVs, it featured an elevated suspension providing up to 200 mm of ground clearance, lower body protective cladding, and distinctive two-tone paint schemes. The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
Power came from naturally aspirated 2.2-liter EJ22 and 2.5-liter EJ25D flat-four petrol engines mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission alongside Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. A mild facelift in 1996 updated the front fascia and enlarged the bumper-mounted fog lamps. First-generation production concluded in 1999. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
