The third generation Outback featured aluminum body components, increased ground clearance, and the addition of the EE20 turbo-diesel engine.
Introduced in late 2003 on the fourth-generation Legacy platform, the third-generation Outback (BP code) exhibited a sleeker silhouette utilizing weight-saving aluminum structural panels. Ground clearance was raised to 213 mm for improved rough-road capability. Powertrains included the 2.5L EJ25, the turbocharged 2.5L EJ255 (250 hp in XT trims), and the 3.0L EZ30 flat-six engine (245 hp). The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike. Engine bay packaging ensured optimal front-to-rear axle weight distribution alongside efficient thermal cooling under sustained driving loads.
A mid-cycle update in 2006 revised styling elements and added the SI-Drive powertrain control system. In 2008, European lineup introduced the 2.0-liter EE20 boxer diesel producing 150 hp, delivering high fuel economy and strong low-end torque. Third-generation Outback production concluded in 2009. Designers placed a strong emphasis on cabin ergonomics, occupant visibility, and long-distance driving comfort. Robust mechanical reliability across the drivetrain and suspension components helped establish this generation as a benchmark choice within its competitive market segment worldwide.
