Introduced in late 2003 on the fourth-generation Legacy platform, the third-generation Outback (BP code) exhibited a sleeker silhouette utilizing weight-saving aluminum structural panels. Ground clearance was raised to 213 mm for improved rough-road capability. Powertrains included the 2.5L EJ25, the turbocharged 2.5L EJ255 (250 hp in XT trims), and the 3.0L EZ30 flat-six engine (245 hp). The engineering setup effectively combined the low center of gravity inherent to the horizontally-opposed engine layout with a rigid chassis frame, delivering precise handling and composure across dry pavement and slippery surfaces alike.
