Launched in June 1991 alongside its badge-engineered twin, the Nissan Gloria, the eighth-generation Nissan Cedric (chassis code Y32) represented a major styling and structural evolution over the boxy Y31 series. For the Y32 generation, Nissan focused the new rear-wheel-drive platform on the four-door pillarless-look hardtop and the formal pillared four-door sedan, while fleet sedans and station wagons remained in production on the older Y31 architecture. The hardtop range was clearly divided into two distinct personalities: the prestigious Brougham featuring wide rectangular headlamps and luxury appointments, and the sporty Gran Turismo equipped with distinctive quad round headlights and firmer suspension tuning. Powertrain options centered around Nissan's V6 VG-series petrol engines, including the 2.0-liter VG20E, the 3.0-liter SOHC VG30E, the twin-cam VG30DE, and the high-output turbocharged VG30DET, complemented by the 2.8-liter RD28 inline-six diesel engine. Notably, manual transmissions were dropped from the updated passenger lineup, with power sent to the rear wheels through either a four-speed or an advanced electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission. In June 1993, a mid-cycle facelift revised the front grilles, bumper profiles, and taillight graphics. Designed primarily for the Japanese domestic market, the Y32 Cedric remained in production until June 1995.
