Launched in 1983, the sixth-generation Nissan Cedric, designated Y30, retained its traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout while undergoing a comprehensive mechanical transformation compared to the outgoing 430 series. The most significant advancement was the replacement of older inline-six petrol engines with the newly developed VG-series 60-degree V6 powerplants in 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter displacements, available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations. These were supplemented by inline-four petrol and LPG units tailored for taxi and fleet operators, as well as diesel engines for fuel-conscious buyers. Transmission options consisted of four- and five-speed manuals alongside smooth electronically controlled four-speed automatic gearboxes. The Y30 lineup encompassed a stylish pillarless four-door hardtop aimed at private owners, a formal four-door pillared sedan popular in corporate and chauffeur fleets, and a versatile five-door station wagon and van body style that remained in production long after the sedans were succeeded. A mid-cycle facelift in 1985 refreshed the exterior trim, lighting clusters, and interior appointments while introducing an advanced sonar-controlled adjustable suspension system on upper trims. Primarily marketed in Japan through dedicated dealership networks, the Y30 Cedric was also exported to selected left- and right-hand-drive markets across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.
