The eighth-generation Honda Civic (FD/FK) launched in September 2005 with dramatic styling. The product line divided into two distinct body concepts: a radical five-door hatchback (FK/FN) for Europe featuring a glass front grille and rear torsion beam, and a sleek sedan/coupe (FD/FA) for global markets. Inside, a futuristic dual-tier Multiplex instrument panel positioned digital speed readings near the windshield.

Powertrain choices included 1.4-liter, 1.8-liter i-VTEC (140 hp), 2.0-liter i-VTEC (155–225 hp in Type R FD2/FN2), a 2.2-liter i-CTDi turbodiesel (140 hp), and an improved Civic Hybrid IMA system. European hatchbacks featured flexible 'Magic Seats'. Mid-cycle facelifts in 2008 and 2009 updated bumper intakes, LED rear light clusters, and interior upholstery options.
