Honda Civic IV (EF/ED) photos

The fourth-generation Honda Civic (EF/ED/EE) premiered in September 1987, featuring low cowl lines, flush glazing, and an exceptionally low drag coefficient. Its defining engineering breakthrough was a four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension system. Body styles included a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, Shuttle wagon, and CR-X sport coupe.

Powertrains ranged from 1.3-liter to 1.6-liter D-series and B-series engines (75 to 160 hp). In late 1989, the flagship Civic SiR (EF9) introduced the world's first variable valve timing system for mass production, VTEC, in the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter B16A engine (160 hp). A 1989 facelift introduced updated front fascias, clear corner lights, and revised interior upholstery.
