The fifth-generation Honda Civic (EG/EH/EJ) launched in September 1991, debuting sleek, rounded teardrop exterior styling. The three-door hatchback featured a unique split-opening rear hatch. A formal sedan arrived with a longer wheelbase, while a stylish two-door coupe joined the lineup in 1993. Torsional body rigidity was increased by 20 percent compared to the previous model.

Engines ranged from 1.3-liter to 1.6-liter four-cylinder units (75 to 170 hp). Key developments included lean-burn VTEC-E engines (D15Z1, 90 hp) for high mileage and the high-revving 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC B16A2 (170 hp) in the SiR II hatchback. A 1993 trim revision updated seat fabrics and safety features like dual front airbags.
