The eighth-generation GMC Suburban debuted for 1992 on General Motors' GMT400 truck platform (designated GMT415/GMT425 for Suburbans), delivering dramatic improvements in aerodynamics, structural rigidity, and passenger refinement. Built in 1500 and 2500 series with two-wheel drive (C-Series) or Insta-Trac/AutoTrac four-wheel drive (K-Series), it utilized independent front suspension with torsion bars on 4WD models and a rugged rear live axle on leaf springs. Powertrains originally featured the 5.7L TBI V8 and 7.4L big-block V8, which were upgraded in 1996 to high-output Vortec 5700 (255 hp) and Vortec 7400 (290 hp) engines alongside a 6.5L Detroit Diesel Turbo V8. Power was managed by 4L60-E and heavy-duty 4L80-E four-speed electronic automatic transmissions. A major interior redesign in 1995 added modern ergonomics and dual airbags. Following the 1999 model year, GMC retired the Suburban nameplate, rebranding its successor as the GMC Yukon XL.
