The fifth-generation GMC Suburban debuted for the 1960 model year on General Motors' newly developed C/K light-truck platform, introducing the C-series for rear-wheel drive and K-series for four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel-drive C10 models featured an independent front suspension utilizing torsion bars (later switched to coil springs in 1963) with a trailing arm coil-sprung rear axle, radically improving ride quality and highway stability. Four-wheel-drive K10 variants retained rugged leaf-sprung live front and rear axles with transfer cases. GMC uniquely powered its Suburban line with heavy-duty 305 cubic inch Big Block V6 engines alongside conventional inline-six and small-block V8 options. Transmission selections included three-speed and four-speed manuals as well as Powerglide and Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmissions. The two-door wagon body seated up to nine passengers and dominated utility vehicle sales in the United States and Canada.
