Buick Le Sabre V (B-body) gallery (1977–1985)

The fifth-generation Buick LeSabre arrived for the 1977 model year as a key part of General Motors landmark downsizing program for full-size passenger cars. Engineered on a re-proportioned rear-wheel-drive GM B-body architecture, the vehicle was nearly a foot shorter and up to 800 pounds lighter than its predecessor, while offering increased headroom, legroom, and trunk space. Body styles included a formal two-door notchback coupe, a four-door sedan, and the spacious five-door LeSabre Estate Wagon. The standard engine became the efficient Buick 231 cubic-inch (3.8-liter) V6, while optional V8 engines included 4.9-liter, 5.0-liter, and 5.7-liter gasoline units, as well as an Oldsmobile-sourced 5.7-liter V8 diesel engine. Automatic transmissions evolved from the three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic to the four-speed THM200-4R with overdrive for improved highway fuel economy. A substantial aerodynamic restyling for the 1980 model year introduced a sloping front header panel, lowered hoodline, and updated tail section. The generation enjoyed strong sales across North America.
