Produced from 1971 through 1976, the fourth-generation Buick LeSabre represented the largest and most spacious iteration of the nameplate ever built. Riding on an extended 124-inch wheelbase on General Motors rear-wheel-drive B-body platform, it delivered a remarkably plush ride thanks to a tuned coil-spring suspension and extensive acoustic insulation. Available body styles included two-door hardtop coupes, Colonnade coupes with fixed B-pillars, four-door hardtops, pillared sedans, and a two-door convertible which made its final appearance in 1975. Powertrain choices were centered on the Buick 350 cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V8 and the massive 455 cubic-inch (7.5-liter) V8, paired exclusively with Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmissions. In response to US federal regulations, the generation incorporated energy-absorbing 5-mph safety bumpers in 1973 and 1974, catalytic converters in 1975, and lower-compression engines designed for unleaded fuel. Styling revisions featured signature waterfall radiator grilles and rectangular quad headlights toward the end of the production cycle.
