About the model
The BMW 3-series began its history with the E21 generation, establishing the rear-wheel-drive compact lineup in sedan, coupe, and convertible bodies. The succeeding E30 series expanded the portfolio by introducing the first factory Touring wagon, all-wheel-drive variants, and upgraded manual and automatic transmissions.
With the E36 and E46 generations, the platform received a multi-link rear suspension, refined inline petrol and diesel engines, and a Compact hatchback body style. Periodic mid-cycle facelifts brought refreshed exterior styling, updated electronics, and improved safety architecture across all derivatives.
The E90 era marked a broad shift toward turbocharged engines and modern six-speed gearboxes. In the F30 generation, a Gran Turismo liftback joined the traditional sedan and wagon, while two-door variants branched off. The current G20 generation continues the lineage as a sedan and wagon built on the CLAR platform.

BMW adds 570-horsepower twin-turbo V8 to 7 Series lineup with M760 xDrive
