About the model
The BMW 5-series began in 1972 with the first-generation E12 sedan, followed in 1981 by the E28. Both of these early generations were manufactured strictly as four-door sedans, offering gasoline and diesel engines paired with manual or automatic transmissions.
With the arrival of the third-generation E34, a Touring wagon body style was introduced alongside the traditional sedan. This two-body lineup continued through the E39 and E60/E61 generations, which brought advanced chassis architectures, increased aluminum construction, updated inline engines, and modern multispeed automatic gearboxes.
In the sixth generation, the F10/F11 lineup was expanded to include the Gran Turismo F07 fastback. The subsequent G30/G31 and modern G60/G61 generations returned to the core sedan and wagon formats, integrating advanced digital architectures, refined all-wheel drive, and modern driver assistance technologies.
