The Audi A8 debuted in 1994 with the D2 generation, becoming the brand's first luxury flagship sedan built on the lightweight aluminum Space Frame architecture. It featured V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines paired with automatic transmissions and the signature quattro all-wheel drive system, receiving updated optics and interior trim during its mid-cycle facelift.

The second-generation D3 arrived in 2002, introducing adaptive air suspension and the MMI infotainment system. The powertrain lineup expanded to include high-displacement V10 and W12 engines alongside refined multi-stage automatic gearboxes, while its subsequent update established the prominent Singleframe grille design.

The D4 generation launched in 2010 on a revised platform, integrating modern turbocharged TFSI and TDI engines with eight-speed automatic transmissions. In 2017, the fourth-generation D5 debuted, bringing all-wheel steering, mild-hybrid powertrains, and dual-touchscreen interior controls to the flagship sedan lineup.
