About this generation

The first-generation Audi A8 (D2) revolutionized the flagship luxury class as the world's first mass-production all-aluminum space frame sedan.

Unveiled in 1994, the first-generation Audi A8 (chassis code D2) revolutionized the full-size flagship luxury sedan market. The D2 achieved iconic status as the world's first mass-produced car constructed with an all-aluminum body shell utilizing the Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, which reduced structural weight by around 40 percent compared to conventional steel construction.

Engine options included 2.8 V6, 3.7 V8, 4.2 V8, and the flagship 6.0 W12 gasoline engines, alongside groundbreaking 2.5 V6 TDI and 3.3 V8 TDI diesels.
